On June 13, 2011?Senior Attorney in NRDC?s New York Urban Program and fracking expert, Kate Sinding, was joined by actor Mark Ruffalo to discuss his Anti-Hydro Fracking Campaign and the release of his new PSA.?I Love My NY Water demonstrates a funny take on a serious issue. Currently, New York has a moratorium on most kinds of fracking while the practice is reviewed but the reality that this could be lifted has caused these celebrities to join forces in a call-to-action to urge people to get involved.
?This comes at an important time as Governor Cuomo recently indicated he may rush the environmental review of fracking to completion by the end of the month and related legislation still pending in the statehouse as the session draws to a close,? says Kate Slusark, Media Relations Associate at NRDC.
Hydraulic fracturing? also known as ?fracking? ?has been around for decades, and it is an increasingly prominent tool in the effort to release natural gas that had previously been inaccessible. The process involves forcing a mixture of water, chemicals, and sand at high pressure down into in pockets, or veins, where the shale naturally fractured during settling. The oil and gas industry estimates that 90 percent of the more than 450,000 operating gas wells in the United States rely on fracking.?Large deposits of natural gas are projected to be located deep within the Marcellus shale formation that covers most of New York State and extends to depths down to 7,000 feet below the surface. Many environmental groups concerns are due to lack of regulation of the certain chemicals that can be injected underground. Fracking may put drinking water for millions of New Yorkers at risk.
The EPA?s efforts and concerns have had them diligently working to protect not only the New York City watershed, but the quality of water throughout the entire state. Though it is still uncertain all that goes into the cocktail of chemicals involved in fracking, findings from environmental clean-up sites demonstrate that known toxins are regularly being used, including hydrochloric acid, diesel fuel (which contains benzene, tuolene, and xylene) as well as formaldehyde, polyacrylimides, arsenic, and chromates.The EPA is conducting its own study of the impact of hydraulic fracturing on drinking water supplies, due out in late 2012.
?This is a very powerful way to reach people and like it or not, celebrities happen to have a better chance of reaching people,? Ruffalo said. ?I see how effective it is with people.?
