GAINESVILLE, Fla. --- The discovery of two new extinct camel species by University of Florida scientists sheds new light on the history of the tropics, a region containing more than half the world's biodiversity and some of its most important ecosystems.

Appearing online this week in the Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology, the study is the first published description of a fossil mammal discovered as part of an international project in Panama. Funded with a grant from the National Science Foundation, UF paleontologists and geologists are working with the Panama Canal Authority and scientists at the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute to make the most of a five-year window of excavations during Panama Canal expansions that began in 2009.

The discovery by Florida Museum of Natural History researchers extends the distribution of mammals to their southernmost point in the ancient tropics of Central America. The tropics contain some of the world's most important ecosystems, including rain forests that regulate climate systems and serve as a vital source of food and medicine, yet little is known of their history because lush vegetation prevents paleontological excavations.

"We're discovering this fabulous new diversity of animals that lived in Central America that we didn't even know about before," said co-author Bruce MacFadden, vertebrate paleontology curator at the Florida Museum on the UF campus and co-principal investigator on the NSF grant funding the project. "The family originated about 30 million years ago and they're found widespread throughout North America, but prior to this discovery, they were unknown south of Mexico."

Researchers described two species of ancient camels that are also the oldest mammals found in Panama: Aguascalietia panamaensis and Aguascalientia minuta. Distinguished from each other mainly by their size, the camels belong to an evolutionary branch of the camel family separate from the one that gave rise to modern camels based on different proportions of teeth and elongated jaws.

"Some descriptions say these are 'crocodile-like' camels because they have more elongated snouts than you would expect," said lead author Aldo Rincon, a UF geology doctoral student. "They were probably browsers in the forests of the ancient tropics. We can say that because the crowns are really short."

Rincon discovered the fossils in the Las Cascadas formation, unearthing pieces of a jaw belonging to the same animal over a span of two years, he said.

"When I came back to the museum, I started putting everything together and realized, 'Oh wow, I have a nearly complete jaw,' " Rincon said.

The study shows that despite Central America's close proximity to South America, there was no connection between continents because mammals in the area 20 million years ago all had North American origins. The Isthmus of Panama formed about 15 million years later and the fauna crossed to South America 2.5 to 3 million years ago, MacFadden said.

Barry Albright, a professor of earth science at the University of North Florida who studied the early Miocene fauna of the Gulf Coast Plain, said he was surprised by the similarity of the Central American fauna.

"To me, it's slightly unexpected," Albright said. "That's a large latitudinal gradient between the Gulf Coastal Plain and Panama, yet we're seeing the same mammals, so perhaps that tells us something about climate over that interval of time and dispersal patterns of some mammals over that interval of time."

Camels belong to a group of even-toed ungulates that includes cattle, goats, sheep, deer, buffalo and pigs. Other fossil mammals discovered in Panama from the early Miocene have been restricted to those also found in North America at the time. While researchers are sure the ancient camels were herbivores that likely browsed in forests, they are still analyzing seeds and pollen to better understand the environment of the ancient tropics.

"People think of camels as being in the Old World, but their distribution in the past is different than what we know today," MacFadden said. "The ancestors of llamas originated in North America and then when the land bridge formed about 4 to 5 million years ago, they dispersed into South America and evolved into the llama, alpaca, guanaco and vicua."

Researchers will continue excavating deposits from the Panama Canal during construction to widen and straighten the channel and build new locks, expected to continue through 2014. The project is funded by a $3.8 million NSF grant to develop partnerships between the U.S. and Panama and engage the next generation of scientists in paleontological and geological discoveries along the canal. Study co-authors include Jonathan Bloch of UF, and Catalina Suarez and Carlos Jaramillo of the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute.

Deadly tornadoes hit Branson, Mo., Illinois, and Kansas

A tornado killed one person near Branson, Mo., overnight. Three more deaths were reported Wednesday morning in Harrisburg, Illinois. Harveyville, Kansas, was also struck by a tornado. Warnings were issued Wednesday morning for? Kentucky.

One person is dead, dozens are injured and some are trapped in their homes after a powerful storm system bearing a string of tornadoes battered Branson, a tourist hub, and a mobile home park in southwest Missouri. Three deaths more were reported Wednesday morning in Harrisburg, Ill., by local TV station, KFVS12. Harveyville, Kansas, was also struck by a tornado causing injuries and extensive damage.

Tornado warnings were issued early Wednesday morning for Kentucky as the severe weather moved eastward.

Rescue crews awaited sunrise Wednesday to begin scouring the trailer park south of Buffalo, Missouri, where at least one person was killed after an apparent tornado slammed the area overnight, Lt. Dana Eagan of the Dallas County Sheriff's Office said.

The storm left another 13 people at the park injured and knocked out power to all of Buffalo, Eagan said. Buffalo is about 35 miles north of Springfield.

An apparent tornado left at least a dozen more people injured further south in Branson, trapping some people in their homes, National Weather Service meteorologist Mike Griffin.

Searchers were going from house to house early Wednesday, Taney County Sheriff Jimmie Russell. The National Weather Service typically sends teams in the hours and days following a storm of this size to determine if a tornado struck.

Griffin said the storm left a trail of destruction in downtown Branson, scattering the area with debris and uprooted road signs, and heavily damaging buildings in the city's famous theater district.

Branson is one of the Midwest's major tourist attractions, drawing millions each year to its theaters and amusement parks. Entertainers such as Andy Williams, comedian Yakov Smirnoff and Jim Stafford have settled in the city.

In neighboring Kansas, Gov. Sam Brownback declared a state of emergency late Tuesday after an apparent tornado struck Harveyville. The declaration covered Wabaunsee County, southwest of Topeka.

Authorities say 11 people were injured in Harveyville. Sharon Watson is a spokeswoman for the Kansas Adjutant General's office that oversees emergency operations. She says three people were critically injured in the storm late Tuesday, and eight others suffered minor injuries. Many of them were taken to a Topeka hospital.

Harveyville is a town of about 250 people southwest of Topeka. Watson says about 40 percent of the town suffered damage. Homes were reduced to rubble, with power lines down and gas service out across the city.

Earlier, the National Weather Service reported brief tornado touchdowns southwest of Hutchinson, Kan.

On Wednesday morning, a? broad tornado watch was posted for western and central Kentucky? by the National Weather Service in advance of a storm system that went through southwest Missouri and caused severe damage in the Ozark Mountains resort town of Branson.

All but the easternmost counties of Kentucky have been cautioned about the possibility of tornadoes.

The National Weather Service says a late winter storm brought heavy snow to northern Nebraska and a tornado to west-central Nebraska's Logan County.

A Logan County dispatcher said Wednesday that he's seen no reports of damage or injuries from the twister that touched down Tuesday in a field just southwest of Stapleton.

Pea-size hail and heavy rain pelted the area around Mullen, which is 40 miles north-northwest of Stapleton.

The weather service says up to 8 inches of snow fell in a band from Gordon east to Ainsworth.

Sony's 2012 Xperia series gets together for awkward family portrait

While Sony's newly-christened Xperia phones are a bit difficult to tell apart, there's nothing quite like getting the whole clan together to tell these statement slabs apart. It's largely about the size and build differences here -- while the 4.3-inch Xperia S readies itself for retail stores very soon, the middleweight Xperia P is showing off its aluminum unibody frame. The Xperia U then shyly rounds out the series with the smallest footprint of the bunch. Hopefully our gallery will help you decide exactly which Sony phone is the one for you.

Magnetic Yeast

?In biology, magnetism is a unique and virtually orthogonal physical property.?

Only a few organisms can actively sense and utilize magnetic fields. Magnetotactic bacteria contain strings of iron-dense membrane-bound organelles filled with magnetic crystals called magnetosomes, which act like microscopic compasses. Bacteria that contain magnetosomes can detect the earth?s magnetic field, telling them which direction is up and helping them find oxygen closer to the surface of the water. Migratory animals can also navigate by following the earth?s magnetic field lines, but the mechanism by which they sense geomagnetic fields remains unclear.

All other organisms contain iron, but rarely enough to be noticeably magnetic. An amazing paper published today by Keiji Nishida and Pamela Silver in PLoS Biology demonstrates how by physiologically or genetically altering the iron content inside yeast, cells can become magnetized and attracted to magnets. Almost all cells, from bacteria to humans contain the protein ferritin, which sequesters iron inside the cell (preventing iron toxicity) and releases it as needed. Yeast don?t normally contain ferritin, typically collecting iron inside organelles called the vacuole instead. Deleting genes that help the vacuole pick up iron and genetically engineering yeast to produce ferritin can increase the amount of iron that yeast cells can take up, enough to noticeably increase their magnetism.

?The cell cultures were exposed to magnets and attraction was observed.?

When you add iron the media that yeast are growing in, even wild-type, unengineered cells are a little magnetic, this ?basal magnetization? being caused by the iron accumulating in the vacuole. Using a superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID), Nishida shows that the synergistic effect of deleting iron accumulation in the vacuole and expressing ferritin makes the cells 3 times more magnetic than wild-type yeast, able to be quickly attracted to magnets placed underneath the liquid culture (in cute patterns or not):

Next, they wanted to see if they could control the yeast magnetism not just by adding more iron, but by controlling genes involved in iron homeostasis or cellular redox state. Redox balance determines how many electrons are available in the cell, and when there are fewer electrons iron will be oxidized from Fe2+ to Fe3+ and precipitate out of solution into magnetic clusters. Out of 60 gene deletions screened for changes in magnetism, one gene in particular was found to be necessary for the magnetism observed in high iron media. TCO89 is a nonessential part of TORC1, a complex of many proteins involved in regulating cellular stress responses, including nutrient and redox stress. When TCO89 was deleted, the cells were not magnetic, and when it was expressed in multiple copies the cells were more strongly attracted to the magnet. Because of this genetic dose-dependence, magnetism can be induced in yeast by controlling the expression of TCO89 with gene regulatory machinery that can be activated by external conditions, such as the presence of nutrients or chemicals. This can be used as a unique biological input or output in synthetic biology, improve efforts for precipitation and bioremediation of dangerous metals, as well as impact our understanding of cellular iron and electron metabolism.

?The importance of redox state in magnetization offers insight into magnetotactic bacteria.?

Magnetotactic bacteria live exclusively in microaerobic environments, using their magnetic crystals to find the perfect oxygen concentration. Oxygen availability influences the cell?s redox state, hinting at a possible evolutionary connection between iron sequestration, redox mediation, and the evolution of bio-magnetism. Perhaps cells adapted to certain redox conditions created the ideal chemical environment for the formation of iron crystals, which evolved into magnetosomes.

Magnetism is fascinating, and the fact that biology can create magnets genetically through processes fundamental to the biochemistry of all cells can seem nothing short of magical. Check out the video with the authors below:

Home Theaters | Article Gurus

When customers talk about a home theater system, they are talking about many different aspects of the home?s entertainment system, including the video and the audio system you are using. In most cases, persons only concentrate on the video aspect of the home theater, not realizing that the audio part is just as important as the video.

Beginning in the 1990s, video inputs were added to stereo receivers and amplifiers. Today, almost all companies that produce entertainment systems make combination audio/video equipment for home theater listening and viewing.

To have an entertainment system that is considered a ?home theater,? you need to know a large-screen tv set connected to a hi-fi sound system. Most homes with home theaters use a large-screen projection system rather than a hdtv set.

Types of Products Available

The purpose of having a home theater system is to reproduce cinema-quality picture and sound in your home. The video aspect is usually a large-screen, high-definition tv set or a projection system with a movie screen to project the image on. The audio system is usually provided by a hi-fidelity surround sound system.

In the past, a hdtv, VCR, and a set of speakers were the only form of home theater system available for consumers. Today, the modern technology permits advanced to the point that it is no longer necessary to go to a movie house to enjoy a theater-quality movie experience.

Cost

The cost of these items depends on which items you wish to use in your home theater. A large, widescreen, hi-definition television system can easily cost around $ 2,500, and the sound system can probably cost approximately $ 500 to $ 800, depending on the quality of sound and the brand you intend to purchase. The cost of these systems will likewise vary among different department stores. It will be your responsibility to find the good brands at the lowest prices. Do not just look into one store, shop around in other stores.

Romney's organizational strength helps in Michigan (AP)

[unable to retrieve full-text content]AP - The standing-room-only crowd crammed into a Holiday Inn conference room in this industrial city roared with approval as Rick Santorum served up applause lines on why Michigan Republicans should choose him, not native-son Mitt Romney, as the GOP presidential nominee. Santorum's message, heavy on religious values and contempt for bailouts, was perfect for an audience in this stronghold of social conservatism and tea party sentiment.

A Walk Through The Grisedale Valley - Travel - EzineMark

The Grisedale Valley, much loved by Wordsworth, is well worth exploring especially if you have your dog in tow, they?ll love running over the fells and taking a dip in the tarns as they run along. There are several dog friendly Lake District cottages in the area which would make the ideal base from which to explore this wonderful valley.

Set off from Patterdale village and head deeper into the valley towards what is known as Grisedale Forest despite the very apparent lack of trees. You will pass Ruthwaite Lodge, a climbing hut on your right as you make your way through rocky scenery towards Grisedale Tarn. The imposing craggy face of Dollywagon Pike looms above but wait for your photo opportunity, it is even better further on.

Just off the path before the tarn is Brother?s Parting Stone and much easier to spot from this direction.

A poem is inscribed into the stone though it is weatherworn and largely unintelligible. The stone is said to mark the spot where William Wordsworth and his brother John last saw each other before John drowned at sea.

As you reach Grisedale Tarn cross the stepping stones to the left and walk clockwise around the tarn towards Hause Gap and follow the clear path alongside the wall to the summit of Fairfield. Due to the rocky nature of the summit and various piles of stones, shelters and paths in many directions, a map and compass are essential to get off the summit safely in poor conditions.

There are many shelters on Fairfield for a lunch stop and are perfect to survey the view.? The next leg of the walk heads downwards over Cofa Pike a rocky pinnacle between Fairfield and St Sunday Crag.

From here don?t forget to look back to Dollywagon Pike across the valley for the impressive view of the craggy face.

The descent from St Sunday Crag offers several choices, a straight down descent from Birks to Elm How Plantation, however my preference is to walk down over Birks towards Trough Head and through the interesting rocky tops of Arnison Crags. This route takes you straight down into the garden and carpark of the Patterdale Hotel, which is a perfect place to stop for a well deserved pint or cup of tea in the welcoming bar.

There are several Lake District cottages in the area which are ideally situated to give you a great base from which to explore Grisedale and other surrounding valleys.

Has anyone read about the GAPS diet? It's new since 2008 pretty much. My daughter, 23, and myself, her mom, have started the diet to relieve symptoms of Bipolar. Anyway, if anyone has tried it, let me know. Apparently you have to cut out all sugar, starches, grains for about 2 years to heal your "gut," and also take probiotics. And then you will be able to see huge changes in issues, depending on your age and the severity of your symptoms and length of time. Dr. Natasha Campbell-McBride is the doctor who discovered it. She cured her 3-year old son of Autism apparently through this diet.

I'll have to look that up......because I do not believe it cures autism. Other then that I don't think I could survive on such a diet..where would I get my calories? I am under weight so yeah I gotta eat some fatty foods.

Spartanburg doctor reflects on military service in Europe after WWII

Dr. Charles B. Hanna Sr., at his home in Spartanburg, reflects on serving in Europe after World War II.

Last Modified: Saturday, February 25, 2012 at 11:54 p.m.

World War II was over. Tens of millions had lost their lives. Yet its devastation was raw and evident when Dr. Charles B. Hanna Sr. arrived on the battle-ravaged continent of Europe.

Hanna, a Spartanburg County native, was called up for active duty by the Army in April 1946. He had graduated from The Citadel and the Medical College of South Carolina, now the Medical University of South Carolina.

He received orders to go overseas, and the private first class set sail on a ship bound for France. Also aboard were German prisoners being returned to their native country. Hanna would also go to Germany and work in a hospital in a city firebombed before his arrival.

The hospital had been taken over by U.S. forces, and soldiers were treated for everything from broken bones to common colds. Hanna said it was operated like a general hospital. He served a couple months there.

Meanwhile, the Nuremberg Trials were under way. Nazi leaders were on trial before the International Military Tribunal for war crimes, crimes against peace, conspiracy to wage aggressive war and crimes against humanity, including killing 6 million Jews.

Hanna decided to attend the trial. For a day, he watched the proceedings.

The accused were lined up in two rows, Hanna said. Among them was Hermann Goering, who was later found guilty and sentenced to hang. Goering committed suicide before his execution.

Hanna was left with the impression that the Allied forces leading the trial were uncertain what to do because of the unprecedented nature of the trial. They considered the defendants guilty but questioned the extent of their guilt.

Asked about the atmosphere in the courtroom, Hanna said, ?How are we going to convince them and the people at home that they deserve punishment like we're going to give them? You knew when you walked in the room that they were going to get the book thrown at them.?

In the end, 13 were sentenced to death, six to prison and three acquitted.

Hanna was eventually tasked with assisting those who suffered in the aftermath of World War II.

A colonel questioned him about his medical training. Hanna had trained to be a surgeon. The colonel, he said, wanted to know how much he knew about nutrition. Hanna told him that he'd had one lecture on the subject.

?He said, ?Well you're now chief of nutrition for Austria, and here are your orders,'? Hanna recalled.

He recollected being handed his orders ? about an inch thick ? and was responsible for distributing millions of dollars worth of food to Austrians under the Marshall Plan, a program led and funded by the United States that offered aid to European countries after World War II.

Hanna said people there were hungry. He recalled that some cooked clover. He also remembered passing stores where shelves were bare. He spent about two years in Austria.

Every day or two, he would write a letter to his wife, who was home with their young son, or to his mother. He missed family and home. Military service, at that time, was the ?honorable thing to do.?

His first night home from service, Hanna said he sat down to supper. Someone came in and announced,

? ?My wife's going to have a baby! Come quick!' Well, I never did get to eat that supper.?

Duty called. Again. That night, Hanna delivered a baby.

How You Can Effectively Manage Your IRA Rollover | Harley Reviews

Typically, the particular words IRA rollover and also 401(k) rollover are employed interchangeably because individuals make use of both phrases to describe the transition of assets from a 401k plan to an IRA after they either change companies as well as retire. The reasons why it is preferred to transition assets from your 401k program when leaving from the company is for the bigger selection of investments and potentially superior returns along with increased control over your retirement cash. The average 401k might provide Four to 10 investment choices whilst your IRA which is virtually unlimited as to your investment possibilities. In fact, a number of people still working for a business may aim to transfer dollars from their 401k to their IRA to enjoy these benefits and in some cases that is possible.

How you will take care of the actual mechanics of your 401k-rollover is important since the improper way can result in unwanted withholding taxes. Whenever moving funds from the 401k to an IRA, you may receive the check from the 401k administrator after which you bring it to your brand new IRA custodian or else you can have your 401k administrator send out the cash directly to the IRA account. The first choice is a bad alternative for the reason that 401kmanager must withhold 20% from the balance if the check is being shipped to you. If your 401(k) rollover is done directly between your 401k program and your brand new IRA account, zero withholding is necessary.

When shifting money from the 401k to an IRA rollover, it is occasionally beneficial to not transfer all financial assets. Particularly, shares of your company which you have inside your 401k as you can get beneficial tax treatment if you take them from the 401k and don?t move them over. Specifically, a lot of the gain on those shares may be qualified to receive capital gains taxes. However, if you rollover the shares to your IRA, that advantage will be gone permanently.

Occasionally, the term IRA roll-overs is used to describe your movement of money from a single IRA account to another. Here again, you may either receive a check from one IRA custodian and hand it to the other or have the prior IRA custodian transfer the cash directly to your new IRA custodian. The latter is a more effective method to handle an IRA rollover since it reduces the risk for just about any problems that could cause needless taxes for you. While there is zero withholding if you get money from an IRA bill, you have to complete the IRA rollover inside of Sixty days or the distribution will become taxable to you.

Note that all dollars taken from a IRA or 401k is not eligible for rollover. For instance, once you reach age 70 1/2, you?re facing required withdrawals from either type of account. Whenever taking those required withdrawals, they get included with your tax return and are then subject to income tax.
