This year was UK's second-warmest ever (Reuters)

LONDON (Reuters) ? The year 2011 was Britain's second-warmest ever, the Met Office said on Friday, although temperatures in December have in fact been close to average.

The mean temperature so far this month has been 4.7 degrees Celsius (40.5 degrees Fahrenheit), 0.5 above the 1971-2000 average, a far cry from 2010, when temperatures were 5 degrees below average to notch up the coldest December on record.

"While it may have felt mild for many so far this December, temperatures overall have been close to what we would expect," said John Prior, national climate manager at the Met Office.

"It may be that the stark change from last year, which was the coldest December on record for the UK, has led many to think it has been unseasonably warm."

This year marked a return to a trend of warmer than average annual temperatures, the Met Office said, noting that all the UK's top seven warmest years have happened in the last decade. The warmest was 2006.

It was the warmest April and Spring on record in 2011, and the second warmest Autumn on record.

The highest single-day temperature for October was also broken -- with Gravesend in Kent notching up 29.9 degrees on Oct 1, beating the previous record of 29.4 at March in Cambridgeshire on October 1 1985.

The top temperature of the year was 33.1 on 27 June at Gravesend, which was the warmest temperature recorded in the UK for five years. Britain's hottest-ever mark came in the Summer of 2003 when the record of 38.1 degrees was reached, again in Gravesend.

There were some marked variations in rainfall in 2011.

Scotland had its wettest year on record, beating the previous record set in 1990 but some parts of England have had very low levels of rainfall. East Anglia had its second driest year on record and the Midlands its third driest.

NCAA Basketball: Purdue Wins, Indiana Falls In Big Ten Openers

After a solid non-conference season that saw the Hoosiers return to the top 25, Indiana starts Big Ten play tonight with its toughest road trip to date. The No. 15 rated Hoosiers travel to East Lansing tonight for a Big Ten test against No. 17 Michigan State. The Spartans have played their usual difficult schedule in non-conference play, while Indiana's ranking is based mostly on their upset of Kentucky. The Hoosiers are still one of the final unbeaten teams in college basketball, however, and will be without Will Sheehey and Verdell Jones III. Those factors make this a very difficult challenge for IU:

The Spartans steal the ball on 12 percent of possessions and block 15 percent of shot attempts. While Kentucky is a very good defensive team, this game, on the road, will be by far the toughest test for the Hoosiers' high-powered offense so far.

Purdue also begins Big Ten play tonight with a road trip to the place where last season came apart at the seams. When the Boilermakers visited Iowa last season for the final game of the regular season Purdue was in the top 6 and had an outside shot at a No. 1 seed int he NCAA Tournament. The Hawkeyes upset Purdue 67-65, and the Boilermakers were never the same, losing their Big Ten Tournament game against the Spartans and int he NCAA Tournament against VCU.

This season's Purdue team comes in at 10-3, but only a handful of possessions away from being 12-1. After late blown leads against Xavier and Butler Purdue is need of a confidence building win on the road. their last three games away from Mackey Arena have resulted in a loss, but Robbie Hummel continues to pace them at 17.5 points per game.

Indiana's tipoff comes at 7:30pm on the Big Ten network, with Purdue following at 9:30.

Papua New Guinea’s InterOil Close to Finalizing $6 Billion LNG Project, Secures Preliminary Sales Deal with Chinese Firm

InterOil Corporation of Papua New Guinea had secured a preliminary sales deal with Chinese company ENN for its first natural gas output, in what could be a thrust for InterOil to finally push its planned $6 Billion liquefied natural gas (LNG) project.

Under its agreement with ENN, InterOil will supply 1 to 1.5 mtpa of LNG for a period of 15 years.

InterOil's Gulf LNG project is a joint venture with Pacific LNG. It has an initial capacity of 5 million tons per annum (mtpa), with possible expansion to 10 mtpa in phases. The joint venture company target 2015 for the delivery of its 'first gas'.

Since InterOil plans to spend $6 billion in its newest venture, it needs to secure some 85 per cent in supply agreements of the total capacity before it finally stamps it approval to push through with the project.

Earlier, InterOil has sealed a commitment to deliver 2.3 mtpa in preliminary sales pacts with Gunvor,?Noble?and the Philippines' EWC. Together with the ENN deal, its total commitment now stands between 3.3 mtpa and 3.8 mtpa. To complete the 85 per cent supply agreement requirement, InterOil needs to get sales amounting to 4.25 mtpa.

The metrics Obama will watch in 2012 (Politico)

President Barack Obama has always styled himself a numbers guy, a rational, dispassionate devourer of OMB, IMF and NBA statistics.

Even though Obama hates to be compared with Mr. Spock, two of his top advisers, David Plouffe and Jim Messina, are so metric-minded they are more likely to exchange spreadsheets chocked with arcane data than pleasantries.

Outside the campaign, headline numbers ? useful but overly broad ? tend to dominate political chatter: presidential approval ratings, a candidate?s cash on hand, the top-line unemployment stats, personal likability ratings, measurements of voter optimism or pessimism.

All are useful, but Obama and his GOP foes are swimming in a sea of other data points that may provide a more telling view of Obama?s political prospects heading into a highly uncertain 2012 reelection campaign.

Italian bond yields. The European debt crisis, a slow-motion catastrophe with no predictable or palatable outcome, has the potential to sideswipe the U.S. economy in 2012, hijack the anemic recovery and sink Obama?s reelection chances.

Obama clearly recognizes this, and privately concedes the Eurozone is the biggest wildcard for him in 2012, even if he can?t do much about it. It must be an agonizing realization: After three years of fighting waves of recession ? and the GOP ? the administration must now cope with events they can?t really master and players they can?t control in Greece, Spain, France, Germany and Italy ? the teetering economy with the biggest ?boom? potential.

At the G-8 meeting in Cannes this fall, Obama?s staff was left to observe the machinations over the Greek debt deal from the sidelines (often watching CNN in a room adjacent to the press filing center). Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner and the State Department?s international finance chief Mike Froman have implored Europe to move quickly to erect a firewall to protect the world from contagion. European finance officials have reminded them that Lehman Bros. was an American firm, and told them to buzz off.

Instead, the EU has opted for a succession of incremental fixes that have left bond rates, especially Italy?s, within a few basis points of the dreaded 7-percent range that could lead to a cataclysmic default and a spillover crisis in the U.S. economy. That?s why officials in the West Wing now pay nearly as much attention to Eurozone bond spreads as Central Time Zone poll numbers.

The Nov. 2, 2012 federal employment report. Just four days before Election Day, the Labor department will give its intensely watched monthly readout of jobs created or lost.

White House officials ? who have been riding an unexpected wave of positive job growth over the past two months, with the national unemployment rate now at a two-year low of 8.6 percent ? are fond of saying they don?t read too much into any one report.

Good luck with that next year. Obviously, employment trends (slow growth, economists predict) are impossible to predict and the long-term pattern will be well-established by next November. But a report released that close to the election is likely to be watched especially closely ? and any major up-or-down shift could impact the race is tight as everyone thinks it will be.

Last-minute shoppers dash for stores

It's that time for caroling, eggnog, holiday cheer ? and for some, a frantic dash to the mall.

Last-minute shoppers hit stores on Christmas Eve in a surge that retailers hope will top off a strong holiday shopping season.

Among them was Len Boswell. He started his shopping at 6 a.m. at Starbucks. Later in the morning he was at a CVS drugstore in Decatur, Ga., picking up candy and a neck pillow for his wife.

"I should have done this a couple of weeks ago," acknowledges Boswell, 68, a director of book publishing at a nonprofit.

Stores are expected to ring up $469.1 billion during the holiday season, which runs November through December. The final week before Christmas can account for up to 20 percent of those sales. Retailers tempered their expectations heading into the season because they worried that Americans weren't ready to spend in the weak economy.

Story: Shoplifters taking bigger piece of holiday pie

But sales have been brisk during the two-month period, rising 2.5 percent from the start of the season on Nov. 1 through last Saturday, according to research firm ShopperTrak, which did not give a dollar figure. As a result, ShopperTrak upgraded its sales growth forecast to 3.7 percent from its 3 percent estimate heading into the season.

"We're seeing good traffic, good sales," said Sherif Mityas, a partner in the retail practice at A.T. Kearney, a management consulting firm. "Even with all the bad news and hesitancy in terms of the economy, consumers are still opening up their wallets more than last year, which is good news."

But at a time when Americans are still concerned about high unemployment, stagnant wages and market uncertainty, retailers aren't willing to leave anything to chance on the final shopping days before Christmas.

Toys R Us and some Macy's have been open 24 hours a day in the days leading up to Christmas. At malls, Abercrombie & Fitch has been offering a blanket 50 percent off on all items while J. Crew and Madewell offered 30 percent off. Retailers' promotional e-mails are up 34 percent from a year ago, according to Responsys, which tracks e-mail activity from more than 100 merchants.

"They're clearly putting their best foot forward on promotions right now," said John Morris, analyst at BMO Capital Markets. Morris estimates that promotional sale activity is up about 7 percent compared with last year, taking into account the level of markdowns and the amount of goods marked down.

What to shop for in the post-Christmas sales

Whether it's the sales or just plain-old procrastination, last-minute shoppers were drawn to stores across the country on Christmas Eve.

Taubman Centers, which operates malls across the country including The Mall at Short Hills in New Jersey and Beverly Center in Los Angeles, reported almost-full parking lots at some malls by 10 a.m., earlier than last year. Apparel, electronics, perfume and jewelry were among the biggest sellers.

Macy's, in New York's Herald Square, also was packed with shoppers by late morning. The store has been open around the clock since Wednesday and was set to close at 6 p.m. on Saturday.

Kimberly Sylvester, 28, was out for the first time doing her holiday shopping Christmas Eve. She had already spent $160 at Victoria's Secret, taking advantage of a sale ? two bras for $40 ? for her sister. At Macy's, she picked up Lauren by Ralph Lauren sheets marked down to $79. Sylvester, who works with special needs children, said she has been too busy to shop.

Story: Shoppers winning 'game of chicken' with stores

At Manhattan Mall in New York, there was a steady stream of shoppers Saturday morning.

Shamek Shider, 22, was among them. He had spent $100 at Macy's on snow suits for his goddaughter on Friday, his first time out holiday shopping. He came back on Christmas Eve and spent $250 on jewelry and clothing at Macy's and J. C. Penney for his mother, sister and other relatives.

"This is when I see the best deals," said Shider, who lives in Newark, N.J.

Ryan Eagle, 25, planned to hit South Park Mall in Charlotte, N.C., Saturday morning to shop for presents for his wife. He always shops on Christmas Eve, he said, to get good deals and to people-watch. Last year, he found $200 boots on sale for $50 at Macy's.

"I'm a last-minute person," he said. "I enjoy going out and watching everyone run around."

Kim Jong Il: Greatest. Filmmaker. Ever.

His role in leading the North Korean people to a perfect Worker's Paradise is well known (aside from a few unfortunate famines). But as film director, Kim Jong Il deserves a retrospective.

To his fans, Kim Jong Il was not merely the Dear Leader, the general secretary of the Workers' Party of Korea, chairman of the National Defence Commission of the DPRK and supreme commander of the Korean People's Army, not to mention the ?father of the nation and lodestar of national reunification.? He was also the Greatest. Filmmaker. Ever.

Sure, the American capitalists have Martin Scorsese, Francis Ford Coppola, and the Farrelly Brothers. But what American director can say he produced a ?revolutionary film? of ?high ideological and artistic value, which makes an effective contribution to arming people fully with the Party's monolithic ideology and which imbues the whole of society with the great Juche idea."

(A note to aspiring revolutionary filmmakers in Hollywood: The Juche idea is defined as the ?philosophical principle that man is the master of everything and decides everything.? Think of the heroic self-determination of Molly Ringwold in her ?16 Candles? phase, meets the glorious masculinity of Tom Cruise in his ?Top Gun? phase, meets Mao Zedong in his ?Speech At The Ninth Plenum Of The Eighth CPC Central Committee? phase.)

Aficionados of Kim Jong-il?s filmmaking genius ? and they are estimated to be 24,346,229 people, exactly the population of North Korea ? will tell you that the most shining example of Kim Jong-il?s Juche Idea was put to film in 1985 with the classic monster film "Pulgasari."

Called one of the most, well, Kim-Jong-ilian movies of the century, Pulgasari is an allegory of the common man?s fight against tyranny, as hapless medieval Korean peasants team up with a giant iron-eating bull to overthrow an evil king. The fact that the young director Kim had to kidnap a South Korean director, Shin Sang-Ok, and his actress wife, Choe Un-Hee, and hold them captive for eight years in order to produce the film can only be said to add to its visual and rhetorical power.

American film critics Rusty Ward and Kevin Maher, hosts of ?So Bad It?s Good? on youtube.com, gave the film a reasonably positive review.?

When Kim Jong Il?s death was announced, there were many Western headlines ? notably this one from the Guardian?s Luke Harding ? attempting to distract the world?s attention to Kim?s genius by warning of Pyongyang?s uncertain control over its nuclear arsenal.

The North Korean government assured the world, however, that while Kim?s death was ?greatest loss to the WPK and the Korean revolution and the bitterest grief to all the Koreans at home and abroad,? the North Korean ship of state was in the capable hands of Kim?s son, Kim Jong-un. ?No force on earth can check the revolutionary advance of our party, army, and people under the wise leadership of Kim Jong Un,? the Associated Press quoted the government saying on Monday.

Kim Jong-il ? he whose birth was announced by a new star, a double rainbow, a talking iceberg; he who attempted to breed giant rabbits to eliminate hunger; he who had disabled people removed from Pyongyang during a youth festival ? would have easily understood how to operate in Hollywood, a town with supersized egos and brutal politics. And he was a man that, with a better agent and perhaps a better editor, could have become one of the great B-movie producers of all time.

But Kim Jong Il?s purpose, clearly, was much larger than mere film. ?

As president, he will be replaced. But his director?s shoes will not be easily filled.

Report: Rampage gunman was facing foreclosure

Authorities were searching for a motive Sunday as they named the 48-year-old company employee who shot four people, killing two, at a utility office east of Los Angeles.

Investigators said Andre Turner of Norco in Riverside County methodically picked off his co-workers with a semiautomatic handgun Friday before turning the weapon on himself inside a complex that houses more than 1,000 Southern California Edison employees.

NBC Los Angeles reported that Turner was facing possible foreclosure on his home.

Citing real estate website zillow.com, the Riverside Press-Enterprise reported that Turner's 5,000 square-foot home was purchased in 2004 for $711,000. It was reportedly put up for sale in November for $590,000.

Turner's death was ruled a suicide, Los Angeles County coroner's Lt. Larry Dietz told The Associated Press. He had worked at Edison for seven years, utility spokesman Steven Conroy said.

The two other men killed were Henry Serrano, 56, of Walnut and Robert Scott Lindsay, 53, of Chino Hills, coroner and company officials said.

Both men were managers in the information technology department and longtime Edison employees, the company said in a statement Saturday. Lindsay had worked for the company for 29 years, Serrano for 26.

Two other shooting victims were taken to hospitals in critical condition, the Sheriff's Department said in a statement.

The injured were Angela Alvarez, 46, of Glendale, an Edison employee, and Abhay Pimpale, 38, of Montebello, Edison said in a statement.

Pimpale, an independent contractor, was released from the hospital Saturday, according to City News Service. There was no new word on the condition of Alvarez.

All five people worked in the same area of the same building at the office park in Irwindale, a small industrial city in the San Gabriel Valley, authorities said.

Authorities have released no information on a possible motive for what the Edison statement called "one of the most horrific events the company has experienced in its 125-year history."

"It's a slow process," said Steve Whitmore, spokesman for the Sheriff's Department. "There's a lot of people to interview ? 1,100 people work there."

However, the Los Angeles Times quoted a source as saying that Turner "did not like management."

"He told some people to leave and he was very deliberate about who he shot," the source reportedly said.

Several cars were parked Saturday in the driveway of Turner's home in an upscale neighborhood near a golf club in Norco, the Press-Enterprise reported.

'A real stand-up guy'
Turner's real estate agent Shane Tucker said the home was up for a short sale and he and his wife were moving into a smaller place, but he still couldn't see a motive for something so drastic.

"He seemed like a real stand-up guy," Tucker told KABC-TV as he sat in a car outside the home where Turner had lived for six years as the original owner. "I know he did put a lot of the money into the house, it's really nice. I don't see why short-selling the house would trigger anything negative, so it has to be something else."

Horrified employees barricaded themselves behind locked doors and hid under desks Friday afternoon as Turner walked through the office firing a semi-automatic handgun, authorities said.

The office complex and nearby schools were locked down as the Los Angeles County Sheriff Department's SWAT team responded to several 911 calls.

The company said Saturday it was offering grief counseling for employees and is establishing a fund to support the victims' families. Edison will donate $100,000 and seek employee contributions.

Irwindale is a city of about 1,400 residents, 22 miles east of downtown Los Angeles. It is home to the Irwindale Speedway auto racetrack and large rock and gravel quarries.

Southern California Edison, a huge utility that provides power for most of the region, is one of its largest companies, employing 2,100 people.

Former Mex Pres de la Madrid in grave condition (AP)

MEXICO CITY ? Mexican President Felipe Calderon says former President Miguel de la Madrid Hurtado is in grave condition.

Rumors had spread earlier Saturday that the former president had died, and Calderon had sent his condolences via Twitter. Mexican newspapers and even presidential candidate Enrique Pena Neto had commented on de la Madrid's supposed death.

Calderon's Twitter account later emphasized that the 77-year-old former president's family said he had not died. Calderon also wrote that de la Madrid had been hospitalized for respiratory problems.

De la Madrid was president from 1982 to 1988, as the country suffered hyperinflation and other economic crises. He also led the country during a devastating 1985 earthquake.

Gifts for your pet that won't cost you a dime | Pets Best Blog

A dog with pet health insurance licks his owner.

By: Judy Luther
Certified Professional Dog Trainer
For Pets Best Insurance

With the holiday season in full swing, it is a good time to think about the perfect gift for your pet. While there aremany great gifts you could purchase for your pet, like pet insurance, toys or treats, the following are some suggestions that your pets will love but won?t cost you anything.

1. Health
Your pets? health is one of the most important gifts you can give. Regular visits with your pets? veterinarian will ensure your pet is healthy and will help identify any medical concerns before they become bigger issues. Make the visits to the vet a fun event for your pet to help reduce stress and anxiety.

2. Love and attention
Pets need human interactions and interaction with their human family members. It is important to spend quality time with your pets, whether you are walking them or playing an energetic game of catch or tug. You should spend time every day interacting with your pet and reinforcing your bond.

3. Exercise
All pets benefit from physical exercise, and exercise is crucial to your pets? physical and mental health. Dogs should receive daily walks off their property. Simply playing in the yard is not sufficient exercise for most dogs. Like humans, dogs get bored with the same old exercise routines, so vary the location and route as often as possible, to keep their walks interesting and fun.

4. A warm cozy bed
Your pet needs a comfortable place to rest. During these winter months, invite your pet into your bed for a good cuddle. If you don?t typically allow your pet in your bed, they will appreciate it all-the-more.

5. Training
All pets benefit from training. Like humans, pets learn throughout their lives, and do best when they have the opportunity to learn new things. Even old dogs can learn new things that will stimulate their brains. Training should be a fun experience for your pet. Remember, positive training methods result in positive results. Do not use punishment or force based training methods, which can be harmful to your pet.

Or Call 866-929-3807 to Add a Pet to Your Current Policy

6. Grooming and pampering
All pets require grooming, even if they?re short haired. Run a warm bath for your pet and give him a good rub-a-dub. End the spa day by throwing a blanket into the dryer and wrapping your pup or kitty up for a cozy cuddle up after their bath. Grooming will be a necessity for the life of your pet, so you want to make it an enjoyable experience.

If you do decide to splurge on one thing for your pet this season, it should be pet insurance! You never know when your pet will need unexpected medical care. Whether it is an emergency, injury or a disease, pet health insurance will make caring for your pet more affordable and will help you make those important medical decisions easier. Companies like Pets Best Insurance are great because they reimburse a flat percentage of the actual vet bill?which can make a huge difference for you and your bank account. Diplomacy in Japan in 2011: part 2 of 2

What should Japan do regarding overseas economic aid? graph of japanese statisticsThe Cabinet Office Japan recently conducted a detailed survey into diplomacy, a topic they revisit about once every two years or so.

Demographics

Between the 29th of September and the 16th of October 2011, 3,000 people aged twenty or older were randomly selected from residency registers were approached for one-to-one interiews. Of the 3,000, 1,912 people, or 63.7% were resident at the adress and willing to answer the questions. 52.5% of the sample were female, 8.2% in their twenties, 14.7% in their thirties, 14.8% int heir forties, 16.6% in their fifties, 22.8% in their sixties, and 22.8% aged seventy or older. 44.4% were employed, 9.8% were self-employed, 2.9% worked in a family business, and 42.9% were one of full-time homekeepers, students, unemployed, or retired.

The second half looked at actual diplomatic strategy. I was suprised to see a vast majority favouring maintaining or increasing current UN PKO activities. In calmer areas they can contribute, but I?m not really sure how Japan?s Self Defence Forces would react if there is shooting involved, and with recent talk about dispatch to South Sudan, I feel that they?d just get in the way. I remember in Iraq how they needed another country?s army to form a buffer between them and any potential threats.

Footbridge to disputed Jerusalem site reopened (AP)

JERUSALEM ? Israeli police say a footbridge to a disputed Jerusalem holy site has been reopened, reducing the risk of a potential outbreak of unrest.

The walkway's closure earlier this week was to have been a prelude to its demolition. Jerusalem municipal authorities say it was a fire hazard and structurally unsound.

But any Israeli activity around the contested Old City site known to Muslims as the Noble Sanctuary and to Jews as the Temple Mount, provokes friction in Jordan, with the Palestinians, and elsewhere in the Arab world.

Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said municipal authorities reopened the footbridge Wednesday. The municipality said in a statement Tuesday that the government had called off the demolition plans and will be shoring up the bridge instead.

Pakistani police rescue chained students from seminary (Reuters)

KARACHI (Reuters) ? Police in the Pakistani city of Karachi have rescued 54 students from the basement of an Islamic seminary, or madrassa, where they said they were kept in chains by clerics, beaten and barely fed.

Police raided the Zakariya madrassa late on Monday on the outskirts of Karachi, Pakistan's commercial hub. They were now investigating whether it had any links to violent militant groups, which often recruit from hardline religious schools.

Most victims had signs of severe torture, and had developed wounds from the chains, police said. The main cleric of the madrassa escaped during the raid.

"Those 50 boys who were kept in such an environment like animals," Interior Minister Rehman Malik told journalists.

Many of the students -- who varied in age from 15 to 45 and were kept 30 to a room -- were still in chains while shown on television.

"I was there for 30 days and I did not seen the sky or the sun even once," Zainullah Khan, 21, told Reuters at a police station where the students were questioned and then released to their relatives.

"I was whipped with a rubber belt and forced to beg for food."

Student Mohi-ud-Din said: "I was kept in the basement for the past month and was kept in chains. They also tortured me severely during this period. I was beaten with sticks."

Senior police official Rao Anwar said many of those rescued were drug addicts brought to the seminary for treatment.

"These people were not taken to the madrassa forcefully. In fact the parents of many of them had themselves got their children admitted there," he said.

"Some of them are drug addicts, and others involved in other crimes, and they were tortured and kept in chains so that they did not run away."

A man who identified himself as Abdullah told local television that he had brought his 35-year-old drug addict brother to the madrassa for rehabilitation.

"The chains are not a problem. They are needed because without them heroin addicts run away," he said.

Thousands of madrassas are spread across Pakistan, which is fighting an insurgency by al Qaeda-linked Taliban militants.

Many people are too poor to afford non-religious schools or feel state institutions are inadequate so they send their children to madrassas, where they memorize the Koran, learn Arabic and study the traditions of Islam.

Many madrassas offer free boarding and lodging. Some of the more extreme schools churn out fighters and suicide bombers for militant groups like the Taliban or al Qaeda.

One man was disappointed because his drug addict son had been rescued because the madrassa was rehabilitating him.

"I wish my son could have stayed another four months," said Abdul Hafeez.

Airport worker fired after refusing to load dog

A woman says she was fired as a baggage handler at Nevada's Reno-Tahoe International Airport after she refused to load an emaciated hunting dog on a plane.

Lynn Jones says her supervisor told her to load the dog last month because the animal's paperwork was in order and its condition wasn't her concern.

But Jones told the Reno Gazette-Journal she couldn't put the dog on the plane to Texas because its paws were bloody and its body was covered with sores.

She says airport police shared her concerns and phoned Washoe County Regional Animal Services, which took custody of the dog. The dog nursed back to health and shipped to Texas, but it's not clear where.

Jones' former employer, St. Louis-based contractor Airport Terminal Services, didn't return phone calls.

Singer Mindy McCready's 5-year-old son in custody (AP)

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. ? By the time Arkansas authorities took country singer Mindy McCready's 5-year-old son from her and into custody on Friday evening, one thing had already become apparent to many in America: McCready's life has come to resemble a bad country song.

Since her emergence in the mid-1990s as a honey-voiced success story out of Nashville, McCready has been increasingly known for her personal foibles instead of her music.

This week's custody battle was the latest in a long saga of personal heartache and brushes with the law.

Florida Department of Children and Families spokeswoman Terri Durdaller wrote in an email Saturday that her agency was working with Arkansas state officials to bring McCready's son, Zander, back to her legal guardian in Florida. His maternal grandmother has been Zander's guardian since 2007.

Officials say he's safe and in good health.

"Zander is in Arkansas and we continue to arrange his swift arrival back to Florida," Durdaller wrote.

In Arkansas, Cleburne County Sheriff Marty Moss said Saturday that McCready didn't have permission to be in the unoccupied summer home where she was found Friday evening with her son. Authorities continue to investigate the matter, he said.

The sheriff's office said in a news release Saturday that it was known McCready had been a visitor to the area and that deputies were working with the U.S. Marshals Service to see if the singer might be there. Authorities located McCready after receiving a report of "possible occupants in a summer home that was supposed to be unoccupied," the news release said.

Authorities said officers entered the home and found McCready and her son in a bedroom closet. A man, David Wilson, was also in the residence. Moss said neither had permission to be in the residence, but neither was arrested at the time.

Moss told the Associated Press on Saturday that the house where all three were found is next door to one where Wilson has stayed in the past. He said he doesn't know if McCready is still in the area and doesn't expect that she will face any charges for being at the unoccupied home.

"I don't expect that to happen," Moss said.

Gayle Inge, Zander's grandmother and McCready's mother, was tearful when she talked about the news by phone Friday night with The Associated Press.

"I'm real excited that he's safe," she said. "But I can't explain what this is like. We feel for Mindy and we feel for Zander."

Inge said that her son ? McCready's half-brother ? texted McCready, who responded with a text that said her mother would never see her again.

"I want to wrap my arms around her and tell her that I love her," Inge said.

McCready, who turned 36 on Wednesday, did not respond to emails Friday and Saturday.

The weekend developments capped a days-long struggle between McCready and several others, including state of Florida child welfare authorities, a Fort Myers, Fla. judge and her own mother.

Authorities say McCready took the boy during a visit late last month to her father's southwest Florida home, where she was allowed to visit the boy. McCready's parents are divorced.

A Florida judge signed an order Thursday telling authorities to take the boy into custody and return him. It's not yet clear whether the singer could face criminal charges.

McCready said earlier in the week that she would not bring her son back from Tennessee, where she has a home, despite violating the custody arrangement. She told the AP that her son had suffered abuse at her mother's house, a claim that Inge vehemently denies.

"I'm doing all this to protect Zander, not stay out of trouble," McCready wrote in an email to the AP on Thursday. "I don't think I should be in trouble for protecting my son in the first place."

McCready told the AP Wednesday night she was in Tennessee and couldn't travel because she is seven months pregnant with twins.

The boy's father, Billy McKnight, told NBC's "Today" show Friday he spoke on the phone with McCready and their boy after the judge's Thursday deadline expired.

"He did sound healthy and OK. He wasn't crying or scared," McKnight said about their son.

"I think she believes she has a case and doesn't realize she's pushing her luck on this one," he said.

McCready and her mother have had a long custody battle over the boy, who was living with McCready's mother.

The singer had provided a series of emails to the AP with Lee County Judge James Seals' ruling to return the boy.

"Mom has violated the court's custody order and we are simply restoring the child back into our custody," the judge wrote. "Nothing more. Nothing less. The court makes no judgment about whether Mom will or will not competently care for the child while in her custody. It only wants the child back where the court placed him."

McCready found fame in the mid-1990s when she moved to Nashville at the age of 18, armed with only her karaoke tapes. Her first album, "Ten Thousand Angels," sold two million copies.

Her next four albums weren't as successful. Her personal troubles began encroaching on her professional success. According to her website, she suffers from severe depression.

McCready fought the release of a tape in which she reportedly talked about former Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees pitcher Roger Clemens, with whom she had an affair as a teenager.

In August, she filed a libel suit against her mother and the National Enquirer's parent company, American Media Inc., over a story published in the tabloid newspaper that quoted Inge.

And in 2008, McCready was admitted to a hospital after police said she cut her wrists and took several pills in a suicide attempt.

During the TV show "Celebrity Rehab 3" in 2010, McCready came off as a sympathetic figure, and host Dr. Drew Pinsky called her an angel in the season finale.

Young Jeezy Wouldn't 'Rush Greatness' Making TM 103

'I just wanted to deliver something that was worth the wait, and that's what I feel like I done,' Jeezy tells 'RapFix Live' about upcoming release.

It's not that Young Jeezy pulled a disappearing act since his 2008 LP The Recession. The Snowman has dropped a number of singles and mixtapes since then, but those releases haven't satisfied the thirst for his upcoming TM 103: Hustlerz Ambition. Jeezy's long-awaited album has been three years in the making, but the ATL trap star promises it will be worth the wait.

"I ain't the one for making excuses. I was always taught as a youngin by the OGs that you can't take your problems and make them somebody else's if you promised them something," Jeezy said about his album delay on Wednesday's "RapFix Live." "I went through a lot of trials and tribs and different things, but I gotta take that and endure that."

Jeezy didn't clarify what those problems were, but he told MTV News' Sway Calloway that he had some real distractions that could've cost him everything. Still, the Snowman made no excuses — after all, he considers himself a mascot for the streets and one of the 'hood' 's chief motivators.

"I was dedicated every day. I put out a few mixtapes because I wanted them to know that I wasn't being lax, or I wasn't comfortable," he said. "The Real is Back 1 and 2, Trap or Die 2: By Any Means Necessary, The Last Laugh, all of that was an effort to show them that I'm really working, and I was working on the album as well."

In addition to all the free music he delivered his fans since 2008's Recession, Jeezy also joined Lil Wayne on his America's Most Wanted Tour and Jay-Z on his Blueprint 3 Tour.

Ultimately, the "Put On" rapper just wanted to make TM 103 a quality album. "I just wanted to deliver something that was worth the wait, and that's what I feel like I've done," he said.

The album is due out December 20, but a number of tracks already have been released, including the rambunctious "Lose My Mind" featuring Plies and the soul-baring "F.A.M.E." with T.I. Last month, Jeezy leaked "I Do," a metaphoric song featuring Jay-Z and Andre 3000 that talks about hustling in the streets and marriage in the same breath. Then Thursday (December 1), the Snowman leaked another track, the Eminem- and Freddie Gibbs-featuring "Talk to Me."

The slow-rolling jam finds Jeezy rapping about his inner-most feelings, while Em eerily sings, "Somebody better explain why my ears are ringing so loud/ If someone's got something to say, grow some balls and say it to my face," on the song's hook.

It might have taken a few years to finish the album, but Young Jeezy said that doesn't matter. "I feel like it wasn't time. I felt like I was being rushed, and one thing I was taught is you don't rush greatness," he said. "I don't care about no radio or no label or no date or no deadlines or no quotas — this is for my people."

China expects 48,000 new HIV cases this year (AP)

BEIJING ? China will have about 780,000 people infected with the AIDS virus by the end of this year, state media reported Wednesday, with most having contracted it through heterosexual sex.

The official Xinhua News Agency said that a report from the Ministry of Health and the United Nations estimates there will be about 48,000 new HIV infections in China this year. Xinhua quoted the report as saying the virus remains "mildly prevalent" in China.

HIV gained a foothold in China largely because of unsanitary blood plasma buying schemes and tainted transfusions in hospitals. Health authorities say heterosexual sex has now overtaken drug abuse as the main channel of transmission.

After ignoring or demonizing people with AIDS for much of the 1980s and 1990s, China's authoritarian government has taken a more compassionate line on the disease and combating its spread in recent years. But people with AIDS still face difficulties in getting treatment and compensation, and authorities remain deeply suspicious of independent activists.

On Wednesday, a handful of relatives of HIV or AIDS patients who contracted the virus through tainted transfusions planned to protest in front of the Ministry of Finance in Beijing but abandoned the plan because of the tight security there.

Organizer Sun Ya said the group was demanding government compensation. Sun's 15-year-old son contracted HIV from a tainted blood transfusion in 2002 at the Peking University Dental Hospital in Beijing.

Sun said he and others have tried to use the legal system to fight for compensation but courts have declined to take their cases, so they have resorted to sporadic protests in the capital.
