Be determined to improve your self esteem and you are on your way to great achievement.

Do not let a low self esteem ruin your life. The way you think about yourself determines how you interact with others.

What are some examples of low esteem aspects in you mind that you need improvement on?

1. Nothing you do seems to go right
2. You believe that most people do not like you.
3. You believe that you are not attractive.
4. You choose something and it turns out to be the worst one.
5. You are afraid to converse with others for fear that what you say might not make sense.
6. You feel swallowed up in a whirlpool of frustration.
What?s wrong with you? Your thoughts, actually.

Stop thinking that the world is closing in on you. Get determined to achieve what you desire. Stop blaming other people for your misfortunes. The world is not your problem, you are your own problem.

From this moment on, begin the process of self esteem improvement. Think the right way and be determined to win, and win you will. Just remember that success never comes easily and that is why determination is its counterpart.

Oftentimes, one gets to the brink of success and with just a little disappointment or setback, they lose heart and give up too easily and too soon. A surefire candidate to low self esteem improvement. Who knows what great things might have been achieved if only they had persevered.

Without a high self esteem, your life could be rather boring. Change your thinking and begin to see yourself on top of the world. Make a very special effort to be what you really want to be.

You have to seriously decide either to remain in a miserable state of low self esteem, or acquire self esteem improvement and develop a high self esteem with good character and self image.
The origin of low self esteem.

A low self esteem could begin way back in childhood when children are made to believe that they are worthless. Their self confidence is eroded and they succumb to the idea that they can never achieve success in anything that they do. They were picked on, laughed at, pushed around, called ugly names, and treated with disdain. No wonder they grew up to be full of resentment.

If that was your experience, it is time you cut yourself loose from that mindset and do self esteem improvement. Start reading about the life of successful persons and you will soon discover that many of them had such low self esteem that they could not even complete an elementary education.

Many decided to override their low self esteem and improve their attitude, whatever it took. They became some of the greatest men and women that ever lived.

Low self esteem has never helped anyone else and it sure will not help you. It can only drive you into depression, anger, grudge, fear and all the other evils that it generates.

Re-program your thinking and control your state of mind. You must believe that you are worth much more than you think or you will remain at the foot of the ladder and never make an attempt to climb it.

Do not waste your life away with feelings of inadequacies. Instead, think of ways to go about self esteem improvement. Success is yours, just reach out and grasp it.

More insecurity, civilian casualties in Afghanistan: U.N. (Reuters)

KABUL (Reuters) ? Afghanistan has become more insecure in 2011, with a sharp rise in security incidents and higher numbers of civilian casualties, displaced people and complex suicide attacks, a UN report said on Wednesday.

The number of security incidents recorded during the first eight months of the year was nearly 40 percent higher than in the same period of 2010.

While about two-thirds of the violence was concentrated in the south and southeast, suicide attacks became more common outside that area, with the central region accounting for one in five.

The number of complex suicide attacks has jumped by half in the year to date from a year earlier, and made up a greater proportion of all suicide attacks.

Civilian casualties, already at record levels for the first half of the year, rose 5 percent in the June-August period compared with last year, with insurgents linked to three quarters of those deaths and injuries.

The NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) said it disputed the report's findings and would provide its own data on Thursday, but gave no further details.

"Following an initial evaluation, ISAF found it (the report) inconsistent with the data that we have collected," ISAF spokesman Jimmie Cummings said in a statement.

The report to the UN Security Council by Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon highlights the challenges facing Afghanistan's troubled government and the NATO-led coalition, which started its gradual handover of security responsibility to Afghan police and the army in July.

It said transition areas, which included Bamiyan and Panjshir provinces and southern Lashkar Gah city "continue to face a resilient insurgency that is attempting to challenge the capacity of the Afghan forces."

CIVILIAN DEATHS

A total of 1,841 civilian deaths and injuries were recorded from June to August, of which 282, or 12 percent, were attributed to Afghan or foreign forces.

Air strikes were the leading cause of deaths by coalition forces, killing 38 civilians in July, the highest number recorded for any month since February 2010, the report said.

The overall rise in civilian casualties was attributed to increased use by insurgents of home-made bombs and suicide attacks, which accounted for 45 percent of deaths and injuries.

The use of such devices in attacks across Afghanistan had nearly doubled compared with the June-August period last year.

Higher levels of insecurity were accompanied by a rise in the number of internal refugees, with around 130,000 people abandoning their homes in the first seven months of the year, up nearly two-thirds from the same period a year earlier.

The U.N. assessment of humanitarian needs suggested as many as 1.3 million Afghans may require food aid in the next 10 months as a result of the conflict and "drought-like conditions" after a year with low rainfall.

It also noted a 65 percent increase in eradication of opium poppy fields in 2011 from a year earlier, though it said the attacks on eradication teams had sharply increased, with 48 such incidents this year compared with 12 in 2012.

Last week, OnStar issued a privacy notice informing customers that it would continue to collect data on vehicles still connected to its servers, even for those who have already canceled their subscriptions. The move elicited a chorus of protests from Democratic privacy advocates in the Senate, including Chris Coons, Al Franken and, most recently, Charles Schumer, who wrote a letter to the FTC yesterday calling for an investigation into what he sees as a bold violation of consumer rights. "By tracking drivers even after they've canceled their service, OnStar is attempting one of the most brazen invasions of privacy in recent memory," the New York Senator said. "I urge OnStar to abandon this policy and for FTC to immediately launch a full investigation to determine whether the company's actions constitute an unfair trade practice." Carl Medearis ? Speaking of Jesus | PomoTheo - Missional ...

Another book from theOoze arrived in the form of Carl Medearis' latest' Speaking of Jesus'. THe book is another foray by David C Cook publishing in the 'Gospel' category; a challenge to reinterpret Christianity as a Jesus centered movement rather than a conservative, arguably?Pharisaic, brand of rules and moralistic regulations. Leonard Sweet released a couple books on the subject like Nudge, this is Medearis' first on the subject.

There must be an obvious demand for this type of material, and although I appreciate the direction David C Cook is taking, I would opt for a blog form for books that are short and poignant like Carl's. Of course, you do'nt make money off of blogs as a publisher, so you print a book.

"Speaking of Jesus" has a sub-title of "the art of not-evangelism" which provides a bit more clarity with respect to the books direction. Essentially, cast off the religious rituals and expectations, and instead, replace it with a renewed pursuit of Jesus.

Sunday school was right, the answer is always Jesus. I remember reading through while I was simultaneously writing a sermon on Matthew 5:10-12 where persecution wasn't attributed to those who proselytized, but those who lived out righteousness. My reading on these verses is: it's not the ways you can change people's beliefs that matter, but how you can act like Jesus in their lives operating as previews of the Kingdom of God.

Most of the book was essentially a reiteration of my reading of the Beatitudes. Must like the story Medearis includes about the proselytizer who thought it was wisest to randomly and loudly walk around a strip mall condemning gays, Catholics, etc., only to wind up being assaulted.

Rather than see the err in his ways (the plank in his own eye) the man proclaimed matter of factually,

...if you're not being persecuted then what you're preaching isn't real.

The Beatitudes are the complete opposite of this asinine position. That's just the thing. Some people jealously guard against traditions and systems while completely forgetting about what Jesus actually previewed for the disciples. That is, blessed are the persecuted for my name sake--as in those who are intentional participants in righting wrongs (on specifically in the Beatitudes those who pursued righteousness).

The book will hopefully challenge some to re-assess their faith priorities.

Medearis is gaining a bit more attention as of late mostly due to his work in the mid-East. I read his Tea with Hezbollah book and enjoyed that. This one is a bit of a change in writing style, but it's a quick easy read that you may wish to pass along to friends.

Career Success Advice from an Airline Pilot | Bud Bilanich

As I?ve often said, I find ideas for this career success blog in a variety of places.? The other day I was flying from Denver to Des Moines.? At the end of the flight, the flight attendant came to me and handed me the First Officer?s ? copilot in non airline speak ? business card.? On the back, he had written?

That was a surprise.? I fly a lot ? and I?ve never had a Captain of First Officer send me a handwritten note thanking me for my business.? As you probably know, United and Continental merged to create a huge airline which they call the ?new United.?? They?ve done some interesting branding ? the airline is called United, but the logo is Continental?s.

First Oficer Gough?s note to me was part of that branding.? And it reminded me of Tweet 65 in my career advice book Success Tweets.? ?A good personal brand highlights your uniqueness.? Be unconventional.? Break rules.?? Let?s talk about breaking some rules when it comes to your personal brand.

I love the movies.? I was really pleased when I was asked to review a book called The Big Picture: Essential Lessons for the Movies. Authors Kevin Coupe and Michael Sansolo do a great job of discussing the life and career success ideas in over 200 movies.? This is a very thoughtful book.

Kevin and Michael make some great points about career success that pop up in some unlikely movies.? For example, they use the movie Babe to make the point that it?s important to be different ? and break some rules ? if you want to get recognized and create the life and career success you deserve.? They point out that Babe the pig doesn?t act like a pig.? He is friendly and mannerly ? characteristics not usually associated with pigs.? That?s why he succeeds.? And that?s great personal branding and career advice.? Creating and nurturing your unique personal brand is the first step in creating positive personal impact ? an important key to life and career success.

Here?s some of what Kevin and Michael have to say about Babe?

?Babe is a simple story, but it contains an important lesson.? Think of how many businesses have stuck to the way things always are and completely missed the opportunity to become something entirely new, bigger and better.

?MTV didn?t invent video or records, but pulled them together in an entirely new cable channel.? CBS, in contrast, owned a television network and a record company, but missed the chance.?

I experienced a rule-breaking moment a couple of years ago.? I was in a local bookstore looking for a book on fitness.? As you can imagine, there was no shortage.? As I opened various books to check them out, I found Tamba Mbawa?s business card in every one of them.? I purchased a book and took it home.? When I got there, I went to Tamba?s website to see what he is about.? Not surprisingly, Tamba is a personal trainer and fitness coach.

I thought this was a great example of breaking the rules and personal brand building.? Tamba spent the time to go to a local Barnes and Noble and place his card in every one of the fitness books they have on the shelf.? He was getting his name in front of a very targeted audience: people who purchase books on fitness.? Pretty cool idea in my book.? And one that is a perfect manifestation of what Kevin and Michael have to say about breaking the rules to get recognized for your uniqueness.

When I first started blogging, my dad read a few of my posts and said, ?You?re giving away some of your best ideas.? You shouldn?t do that.? You need to be selling your advice, not giving it away.?? At the time, content-rich blogs ran counter to the rule of jealously guarding your proprietary information.? I told my dad that I?m happy when people read my career advice blog and find ideas they can put to use.? More power to them.? I also told him that people who find my ideas helpful are more likely to look to me for career advice when they run up against a problem they can?t solve on their own.? I was breaking a rule to build my brand.

Interestingly, giving away solid, useful information is the new rule.? Ask any Internet marketer or marketing guru.? They will all tell you to build a relationship and establish credibility with your target audience by providing them with useful information at no cost.? Funny how things change.

George Bernard Shaw is my favorite playwright.? There is nothing so good as a well-performed Bernard Shaw play.? He also had a couple of interesting things to say about breaking rules?

?All great truths start out as blasphemies.?

?The reasonable man adapts himself to the world; the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself.? Therefore all progress depends on the unreasonable man.?

So go ahead, break a few rules.? Be a little unreasonable.? Be unconventional, make your brand uniquely you.

One last story.? Tim McKernan had one of the most unique personal brands I have come across.? He was The Barrel Man.? You might say that Tim was a superfan of the Denver Broncos.? For 30 years in all kinds of weather, he attended every Bronco home game wearing nothing but an orange barrel with a Broncos logo, a cowboy hat and boots.

He wore his costume for the first time in 1977.? He had a $10 bet with his brother.? He bet that the costume would get him on TV.? He won that one, and was on TV every time the Broncos were for the next 30 years.? John Madden always mentioned him when he was doing a game in Denver.

Tim?s unique brand got him inducted into the Visa Hall of Fans at the Pro Football Hall of Fame.? He passed away in 2009.? He was in the stands for both of the Broncos? Super Bowl victories.

You don?t have to go to the lengths Tim McKernan did when building your brand.? But I encourage you to think like Tim.? Being a little outrageous, like wearing only a barrel to football games in December in Denver, can help you stand out from the crowd and get recognized.

The career success coach point here is simple common sense.? Successful people build personal brands that are unique.? Breaking a few rules is one way of building a unique brand.? By breaking the rules, I don?t mean doing something illegal or unethical.? I mean thinking outside of the box and not being constrained by conventional wisdom.? In the movie ?Babe,? Babe the pig succeeds because he doesn?t act like a pig.? He is friendly and mannerly ? characteristics not usually associated with pigs.? What rules are holding you back from building a great personal brand?? How can you break them to demonstrate your uniqueness?? Earnings calls wake up to Wall Street pain (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? Earnings forecasts for U.S. companies are starting to feel the pain on Wall Street and in the broader economy as the odds of another recession rise.

Intense fear that global debt issues and stagnant growth cannot be resolved has pummeled market confidence in the past couple of months.

Earnings have been one of the market's few positives, coming in strong despite economic woes.

But analysts now are toning down double-digit growth targets for the rest of this year and next on the heels of a record second quarter.

A distressing signal came from FedEx Corp (FDX.N), the world's No. 2 package delivery company, which many on Wall Street look to as an economic bellwether. FedEx lowered its full-year profit outlook this week, citing high fuel costs and a struggling global economy.

Since July 1, the Standard & Poor's 500 Index (.SPX) has tumbled 15 percent. Forecasts for third-quarter earnings for the S&P 500 companies have slipped to 13.7 percent growth from 17 percent, according to Thomson Reuters data. But many strategists say those estimates are still too high.

For next year, S&P 500 earnings-per-share estimates are eyeing $112, which would be a record.

"If that number is anywhere near real, order the champagne now," said Howard Silverblatt, senior index analyst at S&P.

Over the last few weeks, analysts have cut earnings estimates for S&P 500 companies across all sectors except technology. Financials are among the hardest hit.

Negative guidance from companies is also on the rise, outweighing positive guidance by a ratio of more than 2 to 1.

Estimates for the fourth quarter and 2012 are down slightly to around 15.4 percent and 13.5 percent, respectively, and could pull back further as analysts react to more guidance, as well as to critical economic data, including housing and jobs numbers, and a worsening debt crisis in the euro zone.

Profit growth could still be relatively strong for the season that kicks off in early October, and that could lift stocks, which sold off nearly every day this week on panic reminiscent of the financial meltdown in 2008.

The Dow Jones industrial average (.DJI) ended the week down 6.4 percent, its largest weekly percentage loss since October 2008, while the S&P 500 slid 6.6 percent. The Nasdaq Composite Index (.IXIC) tumbled 5.3 percent for the week.

"The way things are going, we're going to be in a recession by the end of the fourth quarter," said Barton Biggs, managing partner of New York-based Traxis Partners, in an interview with Reuters Insider.

The mystery lies beyond the third quarter into next year. Strategists speculate that estimates may be inflated by 5 percent to 15 percent as the market questions how far the cost slashing since the last recession can shield the bottom line.

FINANCIALS: THE ACHILLES' HEEL

Financials, worth more than 13 percent of the S&P 500 and the second-most influential group behind technology stocks, have been subjected to drastic cuts in earnings estimates.

"That's obviously the Achilles' heel of the market," said Robbert Van Batenburg, head of equity research at Louis Capital in New York. "Investment banking is probably going to be very moribund, bank lending is still not existing, and there are no gains to be booked at all."

Banks are also suffering from worries about possible write-downs of euro-zone debt and less profitable lending due to the U.S. Federal Reserve's new measures to lower longer-term interest rates.

Financial institutions' shares have been dragged lower in recent days on renewed fears of exposure to European debt. Credit-default swaps, a measure of the cost of insurance against default on long-term debt, have been climbing.

"The wild card here is really the banks. That's really where the earnings for the S&P have been kind of jerked around in the last couple years," said Marc Pado, U.S. market strategist at Cantor Fitzgerald & Co., in San Francisco.

Insurers are also very susceptible to a lower-rate environment, while energy and consumer discretionary sectors are vulnerable to see-sawing commodity prices and damaged confidence.

For the country's biggest insurers, the Fed's "Operation Twist," designed to stimulate credit for consumers and businesses, could threaten earnings for years to come. The problem is returns on insurers' investment portfolios can't keep pace with the obligations they have accumulated from torrid sales of annuities and life policies.

TECHS BUCK TREND

Tech, meanwhile, has been the sector where forecasts are rising behind powerhouses such as Apple, (AAPL.O), whose stock hit an all-time high this week.

The forecast for technology earnings for the full-year 2011 is 16.6 percent growth, compared with 2010, according to Thomson Reuters data released on Friday. In July, the forecast called for growth of 13.7 percent.

Yet even in this healthy sector, a cautionary tale came this week from chipmaker Xilinx (XLNX.O), a component of the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index (.SOX). Xilinx dropped its sales forecast, citing weak industrial markets.

And after a relatively quiet few days on the economic calendar, the flow of data will pick up next week with reports on housing, factory activity, consumer spending and the broader economy. New home sales for August are due on Monday, followed by the consumer confidence index on Tuesday.

Durable goods orders for August will be released on Wednesday, giving an indication of demand for manufactured items like refrigerators meant to last three years or more. On Thursday, the government will release its final reading on growth of second-quarter gross domestic product. On Friday, August personal income and spending data will come out, as well as the final reading on September consumer sentiment from the Reuters/University of Michigan surveys.

This blog is an open letter to SPJ president Hagit Limor of WCPO-TV Cincinnati who is billed on the SPJ website as ?Investigative Reporter.?

Hello Hagit:

I hope that SPJ and RTDNA have a successful conference. Journalists need to support each other these days.

So far, SPJ is ducking the issue of freedom of the press involved in PRSA?s barring this reporter from its Assembly Oct. 15 in Orlando and the ensuing three-day conference.

I have been a member of SPJ more than 40 years and just paid the dues, receiving a thank you letter from executive director Joe Skeel.

SPJ likes my money but neither Skeel nor anyone on his staff will return my phone calls or e-mails.

Acting on my request for intervention by the SPJ in this press boycott, ethics committee chair Kevin Smith of James Madison University, Harrisonburg, Va., contacted ?PRSA officers? and shared ?our concerns and our longstanding support for transparency and open meetings.?

Smith, said an e-mail from ethics vice chair Fred Brown of Colorado, ?also listened to their complaints and all of us (Ethics Committee) read the Society?s 23-page bill of particulars. The Society does have a strong argument as well, and if there?s exaggeration here as you say, it seems to be happening on both sides.?

So Brown concludes by saying ?We saw no compelling reason to pursue this discussion further, taking sides to the point of confrontation. The rest of the ethics committee apparently shares our opinion that this is the Society?s decision and they have to live with whatever bad PR they may get from it.?

SPJ Should Join My Fight
SPJ, acting more like the usual trade association than a group of journalists, sees no need to have a ?confrontation? which is just what journalists do with all sorts of institutions, companies, and organizations. Institutions basically don?t like coverage.

As for the 23-pages of ?charges? against me, they are just that and deserve no credence. They are especially flimsy because no one from the PR Society, either on staff or among the officers, will present them in person to me for rebuttal.

There is only one issue here?freedom of the press. SPJ cannot sit on the sidelines while this is denied to a reporter by an association that bills itself as the ?world?s largest organization of PR professionals.? Barring me now would interrupt 40 straight years of coverage of the Assembly. I have been the only reporter at this all-day session for at least 15 years.

I doubt that the journalists on the program would side with you, Brown or the other members of the SPJ Ethics Committee. I?m also contacting the other members of the SPJ board to enlist their support.

Your speakers include Soledad O?Brien, CNN anchor, special correspondent and author, who as opening speaker will ?share her first-hand experiences on telling stories of under-reported communities and the challenges that go along with it.?

Would O?Brien be afraid of a ?confrontation? with an institution or with anyone?

When I unwrapped my New York Times on Sunday, I was met with a surprise: A front-page, above-the-fold story about a young adult with autism. The feature, written by Amy Harmon, who won a National Academies communication award last week for her ?Target: Cancer? series, is beautifully wrought and a joy to read. But I want to praise it for something else. Many articles about autism focus on the highest-functioning people on the spectrum, who certainly struggle socially, but who are brilliant beyond average academically or in some other quirky way. (Often they have Asperger?s syndrome, which will no longer be a diagnosis with the publication of the fifth edition of the psychiatric handbook, the DSM-5, in May 2013, merging into the broader autistic spectrum.) Instead, Harmon celebrates Justin, a young man with a knack for cartooning, but whose autism is more familiar to me than in any profile I?ve read thus far.

And I am quite familiar with autism, as my youngest brother, Jonah, is on the autistic spectrum. There was a point in my life when I had to explain what autism was nearly every time I spoke about him. But I rarely have to do that anymore. As soon as I mention his diagnosis, acquaintances sigh with recognition, as if they know what that means. And, no doubt, they know more than they once did: autism awareness has never been higher, with one in 110 children born now diagnosed. But I wish I were still given the chance to explain. Too frequently, they follow-up with statements about his intellectual gifts ? ?Oh, he must be really smart then.? ? a sign of the influence of the stories about those with high-functioning autism.

I usually laugh, and respond, ?ah, yes, he is smart.? But I don?t mean ?smart? in any way that society currently values. At nearly 16-years old, Jonah can?t count change or multiply. He has favorite books, but he flips through them too frantically to actually absorb the text. I swell with triumph whenever we have a conversation that lasts longer than 30 seconds, an actual exchange rather than repetitions of his favorite topics, which include pasta shapes, wheeled vehicles, and what we?re having for dinner that night. What I see as his ?smartness? is his view of the world, little influenced by the social and societal pressures that feed my own insecurities.

In her article, Harmon gets at that smartness in her descriptions of Justin. It?s very difficult to articulate but, given the expanse of a feature, she was able to do it through dialogue and his interactions with others. And my eyes teared up as I recognized Jonah, the kind of autism that I know and love so dearly, in an autistic character portrayed elsewhere.

I?m not trying to denigrate those profiles of high-functioning autistic people. Those people and those stories are important in their own right, for one. But additionally, from a journalism and awareness standpoint, it?s also so much easier for NTs ? neurotypicals, as autistic people call us ? to understand those who are high-functioning. After all, who hasn?t felt that they themselves had a useful skill that went unrecognized? Who hasn?t felt socially insecure, held back by their own (in)abilities?

Many stories are also told about the parents of autistic children. As Wired writer?Tim Carmody explains on his blog, Snarkmarket:

Most readers of newspapers and consumers of serious media are typical, healthy, middle-class adults. They sympathize best with fates that are either totally fantastic or resemble their own. Most people find it easier to imagine being the parent of an autistic child. They find it harder to imagine being autistic and struggling with the problems of autistic adults themselves.

In her piece, Harmon invites NTs to sympathize and understand an autistic adult in his own right. Autistic adults are in our society, and as the children now diagnosed with autism grow up, there will be even more. It is thus critical that assimilated folk learn to understand them and no longer ignore them, push them aside, or worse. Journalism can do that. Journalism can help people understand other people. And, as I toddle around in my baby-journalist shoes, that is truly inspiring.

So, thank you, Amy Harmon, for taking this step of bringing those non-genius autistic people, generally ignored after puberty, into public attention. Thank you for highlighting Justin?s trials and spilling light onto people undergoing similar ones.

But it means more than that for me. When I talk about Jonah, everyone asks, ?What is he going to do when he grows up?? And, honestly, I don?t know. He still has five more years of school ? he started public high school this year! ? and I will not let anyone decide for him what he is capable of, and certainly not when he?s still a teenager. But I dream of a world where people see him on the street and don?t edge away, where society is more accepting of those whose brains are, well, atypical. I don?t know if society will ever find a productive role for lower functioning autistic people. But a society whose citizens put in the bit of effort required to understand the individual autistic people they encounter? That is something we can work toward.
